  • Alta Vista Web Search "AltaVista gives you access to the largest Web index: 31 million pages found on 476,000 servers, and four million articles from 14,000 Usenet news groups. It is accessed over 29 million times per weekday." This is the best search engine on the Web. Just give them your URL, and they will index your entire site.
**TIP** AltaVista will use the first 30 words it finds on your page for a description unless you have Meta tags.
**TIP** AltaVista will index the meta description and keywords up to a limit of 1,024 characters.
**TIP** AltaVista weighs the words near the top of a page in determining the priority of how well your page matches a search.
  • ComFind "The Internet's largest global business directory!" With over 100,000 links to sites in 150 countries, this is a great place to be listed.
**TIP** This directory has a strong geographic element. The location of your business will determine where it comes up in a given search.
**TIP** Premium Listings are available starting at $75.00 per year. Premium Listings always come up at the top of search results.
  • Excite NetSearch "Please note: it's sufficient to send us a single link to your site (preferably the home page). Our spider can find related links automatically." They are one of the largest web databases with more than 50 million URL's. Nice search engine, quick with good presentation results.
**TIP**Excite does not use MetaTags, but creates it's own automatically generated summaries.
**TIP**Put complete, concise information at the beginning of your page, and you are more likely to get a description that will be accurate. Be sure to emphasize desired search words in your text on the home page, and eliminate non- descriptive sentences.
**TIP**Excite will not index a site designed with frames, but can access the text in the NOFRAMES section if you have one. The Excite listing is rebuilt approximately once a week. Be sure to really emphasize desired search words in your text on the home page, and eliminate non- descriptive sentences.
  • HotBot " HotBot updates its pages frequently. If any other indexed page links to your page, HotBot will automatically find and index your page. You may also ask HotBot to add a page to its index. Just type in the URL and your email address in the forms below. Select the Send button to initiate the request. HotBot will index your site within 3 weeks." This is a great search engine, with a huge database.
**TIP** HotBot supports both the keywords and description Meta Tags
**TIP** If you really think that your page was wrongly indexed, you can send email to bugs@hotbot.com
  • InfoSeek "Add a URL to Infoseek Instantly! Submit a Web page to Infoseek and it will be searchable within minutes." Only the page you provide will be indexed. If you wish to submit an entire Web site you must enter each URL, one at a time. There have been some great changes to Infoseek. It is no longer a simple search engine, but a true Internet information source. PC Week Labs says it's extensive new features make it the most fully equipped search site they have ever seen.
**TIP** If you want to submit a large number of pages, you can send a list of URLs, one per line, to www-request@infoseek.com. (Each URL in the e-mail must start with http://).
**TIP** Infoseek will index the first 200 characters of your site after the HTML BODY tag unless you have used META TAGS.
**TIP** Your META description can include up to 200 characters of text, and the keywords may have up to 1000 characters of text.
**TIP** Do not repeat keywords more than seven times, as InfoSeek has been programmed to penalize sites that do this.
  • Infospace "InfoSpace, founded by Naveen Jain, formerly group manager for MSN at Microsoft, provides innovative technology and products that enable users to easily locate people, government offices, businesses, toll-free numbers, fax numbers and e-mail addresses on the Internet. InfoSpace Blue Pages offers the most comprehensive government listings on the Internet. InfoSpace Atlas allows users to plot any address on a map down to street level. InfoSpace E-mail is the largest, and most accurate, database of e-mail addresses available in the world. " This is a new search site, very impressive. The business directory alone contains over 12 million listings.

  • Lycos - The catalog of the Internet "Once you register with Lycos, your site will be spidered immediately. However, it will not be immediately available on Lycos. We receive thousands of URL's every day making us the most comprehensive service available. Therefore, it generally takes about 2-4 weeks to be listed with Lycos" Lycos claims to index over 90% of the web. Your URL belongs here.
**TIP**Lycos gives higher scores to pages with exact matches that appear early on your page, rather than further down on you page.
**TIP** Do not repeat keywords excessively, as Lycos has been programmed to penalize sites that do this.
**TIP** Opening your page with an image map may hinder the spiders ability to index your page.
  • Magellan: McKinley's Internet Directory "Magellan site submissions are handled by our parent service, Excite. Enter your URL in the form below, and your site will automatically be added Excite's constantly refreshed database of 50 million URLs. " Reviewed sights have a star rating system and 'Magellan's Green Light' appears next to reviewed sites that have no apparent material of an adult nature.
**TIP** To see what searches people are doing on Magellan now, check out http://voyeur.mckinley.com/cgi-bin/voyeur.cgi
  • REX "Let REX help you sniff out the most interesting, entertaining, and useful sites the Internet has to offer." A well designed submission process.

  • WebCrawler "Note that it will take at least one week for the system to be updated. Check out URL Status to see if a URL you have submitted or know about is in our database and, if so, find out when it was last visited."This is one of the Big Ones. At more that 2.5 million queries a day, you want your URL to be found here.
**TIP** WebCrawler will compute it's confidence rating by considering how many times a search term is found in your document. The more frequent, the more relevant your page is considered.
**TIP** WebCrawler has started clearing its index of pages that engage in "keyword spamming". Don't repeat your keywords excessively!
  • What's New Too! "What's New Too! posts over 700 new and unique announcements every day, all announcements are posted, and all within 36 hours of submission." Be sure to check the description of categories before posting.
  • Where2Go "To be listed on Where2Go you must: Be in business - Have a valid business telephone listing - Have a web site" Many questions about how you do business, payment, shipping etc.
  • Yahoo "Be prepared to give us the following information, Title - This is the name that will appear in Yahoo. URL - Uniform Resource Locator, or in other words, your http://address on the internet. Comment - A short sentence (20 words max) that describes what is on the page." This is the big one. Not in size of searchable resources, but in terms of traffic building, it's among the best. Be sure to carefully browse the categories before deciding which ones you belong in.
**TIP** Yahoo's searches will be based on the words in your URL, title, and the description you enter when submitting URL. Choose your words carefully.
**TIP** Business's must be placed in a Business and Economy category and can only be listed in a total of two categories.
**TIP** Search results are returned alphabetical order, so if you can name your page to take advantage of that, do so.
**TIP** Yahoo considers it spamming if you try to list all your subpages as separate URL's.
